Bob Probert Memorial Ride raises $100,000

More than 800 riders came out with their motorcycles Sunday, June 26th 2011 to raise $100,000 for the inaugural Bob Probert Memorial Ride. The first ride was held in partnership with Hotel-Dieu Grace Hospital foundation, and CAW locals 444 and 2458 to help raise awareness and money for the hospital's angioplasty program.
Almost a year after his death, former NHL star Bob Probert continues to be remembered as a "protector" of his community. Hundreds of supporters, many wearing Red Wings colours, red and white, and Probert's No. 24, packed the starting line for the all-day event.
Former NHL defenseman Chris Chelios served as honorary captain for the ride and said he was honoured to do so. "For Bob, what a tribute to him with this showing of people," said Chelios. Chelios said Probert's wife Dani and the entire family put a lot of work into the event. "These are tough to put together but it was a great success," said Chelios. Probert was one of Chelios' best friends when the two played together for five years in Chicago. Chelios said he watched Probert's children grow up. "I couldn't be happier for the support and the outcome (of the ride) and all the people that showed up," Chelios added.
Proceeds from the event will go toward the cardiac centre, which is treating more patients but lacks the room to perform even more life-saving procedures. An angioplasty is a procedure of mechanically opening up blockages in blood vessels, which can relieve chest pain and essentially stop a heart attack in its tracks.
Riders left from Hotel-Dieu Hospital and wound their way along the shoreline of Essex County before returning to Place Concorde in Windsor for food and blues music. Ranta Marina was the first of five Essex County stops on the run, which started and ended in Windsor. Ranta Marina co-owner Rob Delicata was a member of the organizing committee. He said it evolved over the years to where it was made this year into the Bob Probert Memorial Ride.

LWC Assists the Probert Ride

Special thanks to everyone involved that helped in some capacity or another for making the Probert family proud with the success of their Inaugural Bob Probert Ride. Thank you to those that pitched-in and did what they could to help make a difference in this year's first-ever ride.
Thanks to the Canada Border Service Agency for expediting the entourage from the United States then later to Hotel-Dieu-Grace, lead by retired NHL'er Chris Chelios. I was honoured when my childhood friend Dani Probert herself called upon me in asking for her youngest daughter to ride as my passenger.
No doubt, a successful turnout. Thank you to all the riders that helped led or took the initiative to block at busy intersections. We all got to know each other a little more and are in agreement the process of setting up a large ride is difficult but the experience we shared together made it first-rate.
Afterwards, our group was personally thanked by the organizing committee and asked to contribute our thoughts for next year and what additional steps can be taken in the structure of how we actively participate.
Thanks to everyone in the committee for the Bob Probert Memorial Ride, and we look forward to riding with everyone next year.
