Annual Humane Society Poker Run raises $1592

This year’s event on Sunday, August 22nd 2010, in memory of Stan Kuron was sponsored by Brews & Cues, Lone Wolf Clubhouse, Meadows, Dairy Freeze and the Royal Canadian Legion, Br. 143, along with the 103 registered riders. The affair was a huge success and a lot of fun was had by all. This would not have been possible if not for the remarkable riders. We raised $1592 for the WECHS, but more importantly we raised awareness for the plight of the homeless animals we have in our community.
In our first stop at the WECHS, the mascot cat greeted the many bikers, who saw for the first time, the newly expanded shelter that neatly housed the many strays inside. At the end of the 3 checkpoint route, riders return to the R.C. Legion, Br 143 to a traditional hamburger and hot dog meal, culminated with WECHS Julie Bortolotti and D’Arcy Leader doing closing announcements, awarding door prizes, including the top poker hands and drawing the 50/50 raffle.
A special drawing included a beautiful Harley-Davidson wall monument, made of cement donated by a friend of Martin Hlozan and Cheryl Paquette, which was thankfully won by Karen McCabe.
The top poker hands ran a tie leaving Willy Milligan to draw the low card; therefore claiming the runner-up prize. In conclusion of the prizes, the 50/50 cash award went to our very own Yvette Comartin.
The Windsor/Essex County Humane Society would personally like to extend its gratitude for all who rode and hopes to see everyone again in 2011.

What a wonderful day this was!
This event, in its 1st year made an amazing $3,802.00 dollars which will be used to assist those with MS in a number of ways; assistance with the purchase of much needed assistive devices and a host of special programs that will enhance the quality of their lives! There were many that raised funds for us by collecting pledges, by participating in the fun and games of the day and riding on a fantastic ride throughout Essex County, all for a good cause! **Bill 117 - Prohibiting Child Passengers (Under 14 years)**
Bill 117 introduced by MPP Helena Jaczek (Oak Ridges-Markham) to prohibit carrying passengers under 14 passed second reading in the legislature late last year. It now moves on to the Justice Policy committee. Please make sure your MPP knows your dissatisfaction with this bill. The Motorcycle and Moped Industry Council has petitions, a letter and a postcard you can download and send to your MPP. Make your voice heard. Go to www.mmic.ca

**Bill 117 - Finished**
On March 8th 2010 after receiving official confirmation from Susan Sourial of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario; on or after March 4th 2010, during prorogation, Bill 117 was not carried forward and so they declared it "dead on the order paper". This is an expression and not a formal terminology.
If “Bill 117” were ever to be re-issued it would be with a new number (highly unlikely it would be numbered 117 again) and re-introduced in the House with a First Reading. And then it would go through the same stages - Second Reading debate; if it passes Second Reading, referral to a Committee; if it passes through Committee, Third Reading and then Royal Assent. There is nothing to prevent a Member from re-introducing a bill (with a new number) that was not carried over from a previous session.
In closing, appreciative support be passed along to our members, and to make mention to our friends and associates in the United States and abroad, that Ontario no longer has a pending law in place to ban motorcycle passengers under the age of 14, or the interest to do so at this time with the end of Bill 117.
